Not Performing Well In Their Examinations, It Is Not A Sign Of Incapacity Or Intelligence.
When teens don’t perform well in their examinations, it is not a sign of incapacity or intelligence. It could be that they lack proper academic guidance. Yet some teenagers would still perform poorly even if we had offered the best tutoring services. There are many deeper reasons for this.
Lack of relevance or engagement: Teenagers may struggle to find relevance and meaning in their academic studies if they don’t see a direct connection to their future goals or real-life applications.
Changing priorities and interests: Adolescence is a time of self-discovery and exploration. Teenagers may have shifting interests and priorities as they navigate their evolving identities.
Lack of immediate rewards: Many teenagers are more focused on immediate gratification and instant rewards rather than long-term goals. Studying and academic achievement often require delayed gratification, which can be challenging for some teenagers to prioritize.
Social and peer influence: Peer pressure and the desire for social acceptance can impact teenagers’ motivation to study. Neglecting their academic responsibilities, they may get their sense of belonging on social media or engage in other unproductive behaviors when they cannot fit in with their peers at school.
External stressors: Teenagers often face various external stressors, such as academic pressure, extracurricular activities, family expectations, and personal challenges. These stressors can lead to burnout and diminished motivation to study.
Lack of autonomy and control: Teenagers may feel a lack of autonomy and control over their own education as they are often subjected to external curriculum requirements, rigid structures, and constant instructions from parents and teachers. This sense of limited control can diminish their intrinsic motivation to study.
I offer the βGoal Setting & Strategic Learning for Academic Successβ program to address these deep demotivating factors and encourage teens to foster intrinsic interest in academics.
In this one-on-one session, I will have a profound conversation with teens to understand what is impeding their performance, set achievable goals, and develop a personalized learning plan based on neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) and other established psychological techniques.
Over the course of two hours, the teen will gain valuable insights into how to become self-motivated learners and address their own academic shortcomings.
