Differentiated learning, what is it?
After 2 years of learning in a pandemic environment, as the principal in the video pointed out, LEARNING GAPS has been observed in a high percentage of students.
In a class of 25 or more, the traditional way of teaching ( 40 – 50 mins) before students move into practice work may not be as effective.
What is DIFFERENTIATED learning?
It means that in a class of the same grade, you can have clusters of students receiving different instructions for their level they are at. (their level can be determined through formative assessment which was mentioned in my previous post).
I practised differentiated learning in my Bahasa Melayu classes. All my instructions for the day’s lesson are spelled out clearly on the school LMS which include video instructions.
At the beginning of class, the more advanced students will automatically and independently access those videos, receive instructions through the video and proceed to mastery activities using what is provided in their file.
Those that need more assistance will sit with me as I guide them through. Some of them may still need to revisit the previous lessons.
As a teacher, I have more time to interact with students this way.
So, now the BIG question. If this is so effective why aren’t teachers using them?
That’s because recording video instructions takes a chunk of time. An average teacher won’t have such luxury. Those who do, sacrifice their own time to do that. (My husband can attest to that).
VSCHOOL has made that easier for me to move into differentiated learning for MALAYSIAN syllabus for more subjects.
VSCHOOL contains not just the video instructions but the mastery activities too.
VSCHOOL also can track the pace of the students too.
